Romanticism
Author:
David Blayney Brown

Summary:

Romanticism was ‘a way of feeling’ rather than a style in art. In the period c.1775-1830, against the background of the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, European artists, together with poets and composers, initiated their own rebellion against the dominant political, religious and social ethos of the day.

In this comprehensive volume, David Blayney Brown takes a thematic approach to Romanticism, relating it to the concurrent, more stylistic movements of the Neoclassicism and the Gothic Revival, and discussing its relationship with the political and social developments of the era.

This book is donated by Nicole Henriquez.

Judy Sund teaches art history at Queens College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York.

This book is donated by Nicole Henriquez.

Charles Eyck Tekeningen 1922-1983
Author:
Daan Wildschut

Summary:

Porselein - Porcelain
Author:
Henk Wolvers and Irene van den Hurk

Summary:

Henk Wolvers is a Dutch ceramist, this book is a catalogue of his work in porcelain. From the introduction: "He makes wall objects consisting of rhythmic arrangements of ceramic plates. He creates high vase shapes of paper-thin sheets of clay, in which lines and colours are submerged. Fragile dishes emerge from his hands, which seem to grow into space, because the material still shows soft curves and dents. They have translucent walls, on which someone has, apparently with total casualness, applied marks; tenuous, as if it were the wind spreading the drops of ink dripping from a pen. The shapes undulate and stretch, as if busy finding their definite shapes. There are shapes with scores in their skin, as if the material wants to open itself to the limit. There are shapes with waving ears."

Title translation: "Zadkine and his Dutch students". The Netherlands knows Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967) as the designer of the monument dedicated to the second World War in Rotterdam, entitled Verwoeste stad (Destroyed City), which was disveiled in 1953. Zadkine had a substantial oeuvre to his name and was very much appreciated in The Netherlands by sculpture afficionados. Since the twenties he had a special bond with The Netherlands by way of contacts with artists such as Charley Toorop and Hildo Krop. His fame increased thanks to influential private collectors, who purchased his work and exhibited them in museums. Attracted by his reputation many young Dutch sculptors would go to Paris to take classes with the master, such as Wessel Couzijn, Lotti van der Gaag, Hans Ittman, Pearl Perlmuter, Willem Reijers, Shinkichi Tajiri and Jan Wolkers.

On a personal note, the late May Henriquez (former owner of Landhuis Bloemhof) was also a pupil of Zadkine.

This first extensive Dutch publication gives an overview of the sculptures of the master and tells of the experiences of his students.
